About

We are a non-profit youth rugby football organization based in Charleston, South Carolina. Our goal is to promote rugby to boys and girls ages 5-14.The club was founded in 2016 by Brian Hoel and initially focused on growing elementary age rugby using the Rookie Rugby format.Player and coach participation has waxed and waned over the years but some level of instructional rugby for elementary and middle school age youth has occurred every year since 2016 thanks to volunteer coaches around the Charleston area. The high water mark for Charleston Youth Rugby was 2018 when the club entered a co-ed middle school team in the Carolina Ruggerfest tournament. Many of those players are now playing rugby in college after finishing their high school rugby careers. The primary leaders, volunteers, and coaches that currently keep Charleston Youth Rugby afloat are Kerry & Kris Gholson. Kerry has coached several Wando Warriors (boys high-school) teams and is currently coaching the Wando Wahines (girls high school) team. Kris formerly served as president of the Wando Rugby Football Club. Both are former college and adult club rugby players. Kris & Kerry believe that a successful youth program is the key to the future growth of the sport in the Charleston area. We invite parents, coaches, current high school rugby players, and potential sponsors to join us as we rebuild Charleston Youth Rugby. Most rugby players will use words like "community" and "family" when describing the sport that they play. Many will say that it was life-changing or life-defining for them. At the very least, they learned something about themselves when they gave rugby a try.
